Next, a thin layer of lacquer is applied as an adhesive and pieces of lustrous mother-of-pearl and abalone shell \u003ci\u003e(Raden)\u003c\/i\u003e are sprinkled on to the surface. For the central line, which represents the Milky Way, each individual piece of shell is carefully placed and oriented to enhance its reflective quality.
