HATTORI LEGACY EDITION

A Legacy of Craftsmanship, Passion, and Timeless Beauty

Grand Master Craftsman Mr. Hattori turns over 87 this year now.

Having devoted his life to the art of knifemaking, he remains one of the most respected craftsmen in Seki and Japan, a city renowned for its centuries-old blade-making tradition.

Throughout his remarkable career, Mr. Hattori has created extraordinary knives that are more than just cutting tools. They are works of art, shaped by exceptional skill, dedication, and a lifelong pursuit of perfection.

Even after decades, his finest creations remain rare and highly admired. Few knives today can truly capture the same level of artistry, character, and timeless beauty.

The story behind our HATTORI LEGACY EDITION takes us back to the early 1980s, when Mr. Hattori was a younger craftsman, full of ambition, curiosity, and the determination to explore new possibilities in knifemaking.

During this period, after years of research, experimentation, and countless challenges, Mr. Hattori, working alongside Takefu Steel Company and traditional Japanese swordsmith in Seki, succeeded in developing a remarkable Damascus steel.

He named it HD Damascus — Hattori Damascus.

Today, Damascus steel knives can be found almost everywhere. But in those early days, knives made with Damascus steel were exceptionally rare.

Mr. Hattori was among the pioneers who helped bring this beautiful material into the world of modern knifemaking, developing his own innovative techniques and obtained the Patent for his Damascus Knife Making techniques.

What makes Hattori HD Damascus so special is its incredibly fine, intricate, and graceful pattern.

Its distinctive Vortex Damascus design features delicate, flowing layers that form beautiful, rounded patterns, giving the steel a depth and character rarely seen, even today.

There is something quietly captivating about this Damascus steel. Its beauty is not loud or overwhelming. Instead, it reveals itself through the subtle movement of its patterns, the harmony of its details, and the unmistakable presence of a truly handcrafted knife.

Each Hattori HD Damascus knife carries its own unique character, reflecting the skill, imagination, and dedication of the master who created it.

More than four decades later, a remarkable opportunity has brought this historic Damascus steel back to life.

A small number of unfinished HD Damascus blades, carefully preserved from years past, were fortunately still available. Through these precious remaining pieces, Mr. Hattori's early achievements can now be appreciated once again in a newly completed collection.

The HATTORI LEGACY EDITION is more than a special knife collection. It is a tribute to a lifetime of craftsmanship and to a remarkable chapter in the history of Japanese knifemaking.

We are truly pleased to share these rare and beautiful creations with knife enthusiasts and collectors around the world.

We hope you will enjoy the timeless beauty, history, and enduring spirit of the HATTORI LEGACY EDITION.

About Hattori 傘 SAN Limited

Grand Master Hattori became 80 years old. In Japan, a person’s 80th birthday is commemorated with a special celebration called 傘寿 / Sanju. To celebrate this milestone and his proud achievements as a Master craftsman, Hattori created the 傘 SAN Limited — a series of strictly limited-production knives, each one a testament to a lifetime of dedication to the craft.

This is the 163rd version of Hattori "SAN" Limited edition" celebrating his 80th year old anniversary. For this edition, he chose the Legacy and Historical HD Damascus Tanto Style Blade, and for this special blade, among many of Desert Ironwood materials, Hattori carefully selected natural wood grain texture which is matching with Vortex HD Damascus layers.

Hattori SAN-163 HD Damascus Tanto Hunter has stylish and dynamic Tanto made of Hattori's exclusive HD Damascus, V Gold Stainless Steel core forge layered Nickel and Stainless Damascus steel (countless layers of very detailed, Vortex Special Damascus patterns), 5.5" Tanto style blade, 4.8" Premium Desert Ironwood handle with solid Nickel Silver Hilt, full tang.  Comes with Black leather sheath, and Gift box. The blade comes with the 傘 SAN etching, and the knife comes in a presentation box.
