Grand Master Hattori became 80 years old. In Japan, a person's 80th birthday is commemorated with a special celebration called 傘寿 / Sanju. To celebrate this milestone and his proud achievements as a Master craftsman, Hattori has created the 傘 SAN Limited Edition — a series of very special, strictly limited-production knives.

SAN-149 Universe Edition — Five Knives. Five Celestial Bodies. One of a Kind.

For the SAN-149 Universe Edition, Master Hattori has chosen the #3717 Classic Tanto — one of the most beloved and best-selling knives in the entire Hattori collection — as the foundation for this extraordinary series. The blade retains the iconic reverse Tanto tip with a 4-inch VG-10 hollow-ground blade in a half-mirror polish, while the handle has been completely reimagined.

Rather than the standard oval handle, each knife in this series features a hand-contoured Cocobolo wood handle, carefully selected by Master Hattori for its rich red-brown tones and stunning natural grain. Cocobolo is an increasingly rare and precious material, now subject to international trade restrictions under CITES conventions protecting endangered Rosewood species — making each handle a treasure in its own right.

What makes the Universe Edition truly unique is the individual Gem-Composite Stone inlay on each handle, paired with a serial number engraved on the hilt. Like the stars and planets of our universe, no two are alike.

The Five Celestial Editions:

• Serial No. 1 — Mars: Red & white Spiny Oyster Gem-Composite Stone combination handle. Bold, fiery, unmistakably Mars.
• Serial No. 2 — Mars 2: Red & white Spiny Oyster Gem-Composite Stone combination handle. A twin to Mars, yet with its own character.
• Serial No. 3 — Earth: Blue Turquoise Gem-Composite Stone combination handle. The calm, light blue of our home planet.
• Serial No. 4 — β Librae: Green Malachite Gem-Composite Stone combination handle. Inspired by the vivid green glow of the brightest star in Libra.
• Serial No. 5 — White Dwarf: White Turquoise Gem-Composite Stone combination handle. Pure, luminous, and quietly powerful — like a dying star at its most radiant.

Each knife is fitted with a solid Brass hilt and buttcap, Black Fiber spacers, and comes with a dark brown leather sheath. The blade bears the signature 傘 SAN etching, and each piece is presented in a Hattori Presentation Box.

Only 5 pieces exist in the world — each one a universe unto itself.
